Thomas Bush HARDY (1842 – 1897)
Thomas Bush Hardy was a marine painter and watercolourist. He was the father of the painter, illustrator and poster designer Dudley Hardy. He exhibited at all major galleries including the RA.Hardy's brightly coloured coastal scenes were immensely popular in his day. However, his later work was rather repetitive. He travelled on the Continent, in Holland and Italy. He exhibited in London at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour, Royal Society of Painters in Water Colour, Grosvenor Gallery, Society of British Artists, Fine Art Society, Dowdeswell Galleries, Agnew and Sons Gallery and Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery, as well as at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery. His work is held in the collection at the V&A and British Museum

Hardy's style was highly copied in his day, this has led to there being many paintings being 'attributed' to him, and to a very large number of fakes - genuine paintings of the period but with is signature added. Collectors should be very careful when buying his work, and wary of bargains that seem to good to be true
